2/8 –Melbourne

The first day at sea was great, went by quickly, with a great moonlit night time sail.

We have arrived in Melbourne at our new allotted time of 2pm. Since this is now an overnight port, we’re just going to go out and wander a bit in the port area today, and spend the bulk of our time in the Melbourne CBD tomorrow.

We wait until we think the vast majority of the folks are off the ship, then head to the pier where we stand in a huge line to get our Myki (transit) cards for tomorrow.  They are a great bargain – preloaded with 15 AU dollars worth of fare and lots of discounts at the museums we want to visit.  The line actually moves pretty quickly (even though we’ve got no plans and aren’t in a hurry), and we’re outside in no time.  We wander down the street looking for this restaurant I had found online that was Russian during the day and American BBQ at night.  Thought that was a pretty funny allegory to our current political situation!

But, alas, I didn’t write down the address or the name, and it’s too darn hot to go walking around without a game plan.  So we turn around and head back to the port area to find the cafe with wifi that we saw on the way out.  Passing on the way a really cool little stone church tucked away on one of the back streets a block off the waterfront.

We situate ourselves at the bar and have a couple of beverages.  Sadly, though, the internet is awful and we can barely get our mail. Although I do manage to download a picture compression app that should help with sending pictures.  But that’s about it.  At least the wine is good – it’s a Western Australian Sauv Blanc which is quite tasty.

After about an hour of fighting with the internet and losing about 5 pounds in sweat, we decide to give it up for the night and head back aboard to cool off and spend our evening in comfort.
