5/30 Celebrity Silhouette

Another beautiful day – breakfast in the garden….

…then shower and wander over to Coop for more supplies.  Then it’s rearranging and packing and getting organized for our short hop over to the ship.

We check out around 10:45 and grab our bags, troop them up and over the bridge, then hook them together and head off to the people mover (oh yeah, in all the excitement of the Richmond-HHI-remodeling move, we’ve managed to misplace the add a bag strap for Ed’s suitcase and forgot to bring the bungy cord for mine!  Oy – we found a perfect bungy cord in London, but there was only one – so we bought clothes line at the Coop (25 meters!) and wound that around Ed’s bag for his carry on – hey – we’re nothing if not creative!).

It’s a 5 minute walk to the people mover – 1 Euro each, then another 5 minutes walk to the terminal. We check our bags and proceed to check ourselves in!  Smooth as silk, they let us right on the ship – of course the rooms aren’t ready, but we’re prepared for that – the norm on Celebrity (even though HAL lets you go directly to your staterooms…ok…stop comparing!).

First impressions?  WOW.  This ship is incredibly gorgeous.  Atrium that reaches to the stars (not really, but it’s huge), trendy art work, leather and tile everywhere, bars, lounges, odd little sitting areas like “the hideaway” that sort of looks like tree houses with odd wooden accessories.  It’s just huge and incredible and incredibly well decorated.

There are lots of different extra cost dining venues – the oddest of all we think is the Lawn Club where for $40 per person you have the pleasure of grilling your own steak on a grill. Yep, ladies and gents, that’s right, you can pay to cook your own food!  You can opt to have the chef prepare it for you, but then what is the point?  Now, it is on the very top deck, with real grass and a cool outdoor setting, but, really?  Hey – whatever floats your boat…literally!

It is nice up there – with bocce ball courts, giant lawn chairs and goofy cabanas you can rent for $99 a day – the best thing about it is the sunset bar which is at the back of the boat and you can sit next to the real lawn and just soak up the sun and the atmosphere – not to mention the booze!

The buffet is huge and well stocked (free food is never a problem on Celebrity!) and after lunch we explore the ship – finding the library, the iLounge (yeah, they’ve partnered with Mac), the specialty restaurants, the bars and lounges as well as the wine bar where you can buy a “wine” card and self serve your own wine. Hmmmmm….there’s a catch (the glasses are smaller), but you also pay less and you don’t pay a gratuity – plus you can try all sorts of different wines since they are all served through a pneumatic machine where you just punch in the amount you want (taste, 1/2 glass, full glass).  I’m game!  it’s a minimum of $2.50 less per glass and they have discounted the cards 25%. Ok – done!  I’m set for wine this cruise. yay!

Now it’s off to the cabin, which is really nicely done.  Large, nice fixtures, well decorated.

CIMG6582CIMG6583

But here’s the thing, while they ship is fabulous, there are bizarre little things that they just blew.  Take for instance 3 drawers in the cabin.  Kid you not.  3 deep drawers, but only 3 – unless you want to stack everything you own on top of each other and dig through the drawers, they’re fairly worthless.  Large closet but with no shelf – you only have hanging space. Where do the clothes go? Because you know they don’t give you enough hangers to hang everything.  Fortunately we found a shelving unit over the bed – so that’s where all our shirts and shorts and things are stacked. But if you’re short? forget it – you’re climbing on the bed for everything!

The other bizarre thing is that the cabin door opens outward.  And the next door neighbor’s door is right there – so eventually, someone is going to get smacked in the face with that door, for sure.  When we had breakfast delivered, I had to slowly, slowly open the door – even though I knew the cabin steward wouldn’t be standing close enough, still…bizarre!

Ok – so, we organized, then went out walking again.  Just getting outside for a while. We wandered past the train station, down the main avenue just looking at the trinkets and trash for sale.  Found a restaurant on one of the squares that had free wi-fi so we sat for a while with beer and wine.  BIG BEER….

CIMG6588

As it turned out, the city of Venice is giving everyone free wi-fi until 3pm on 5/31 to help people communicate because of the earthquake.  So we sat and burned up some free internet time until we decided to wander back to the ship for dinner.

As we returned, the Solstice sailed in. How fun! Both ships together.   It was cool to see our “ride” for 30 days in New Zealand, Bali and Australia 7 months from now.

Washed up, dinner (excellent as always), filled my wine glass from the machine, then we headed up to one of the bars where we met the most adorable, funny bartender who kept us in stitches the whole night as we listened to an acapella group, an acoustic guitarist and a jazz quartet (as we were leaving).  Ah…..music….

Tomorrow, our last day in Venice (more of a sea day for us really!).  Then…well…the blog may be an issue. 11 ports in 12 days will not leave much time for writing…so…we’ll see how we do.  Keep checking back!

5/29 Venice

Up and out bright and early for our 7:40 flight. Airport easy to navigate, we’re on the plane and gone, arriving 10 minutes early into Venice. Easy transport into the city – the Express bus takes 20 minutes and drops us right in Piazzale Roma – where our hotel is located.  It’s an easy walk to the hotel, which you can see from the bus circle – although easy is relative since we have our bags and have to lug them up and over one large bridge.  Welcome to Venice with luggage!

Not too bad, we arrive at the Hotel Olimpia, they have our room ready and we are all settled in by 11:30 or so.  After freshening up a bit, we hit the town. It’s a gorgeous day – once again we are inappropriately dressed – we keep expecting chillier weather and keep being greeted with sunny, warm days. Beautiful weather, but we’re in long sleeves and heavy pants. Oh well, we sweated them up in London, we’ll do the same here then get them cleaned on the ship (we have free laundry – yay!).

So wander we do, we head through the Dosudouro side of the city and stroll along through the Accademia area.

Deciding we are hungry, we stop for snacks at a local bar. Great food! Great find!  Little smoked turkey, goat cheese and artichoke 1/2 sandwich, deep fried mozzarella cheese and prosciutto and a salami Panini all washed down with beer and wine – for only 10.50 Euros.  Deal!  Too bad we didn’t see this sign before we ate.  LOL

CIMG6536

We go deeper and deeper into Venice, snapping photos along the way and finally crossing the Grand Canal headed toward the Rialto Bridge.  Now it’s tourist time. The Accademia side of the city is more local, less packed – over here near Rialto and San Marco – ay yi yi!  But, we knew to expect this – so we shuffle our way back toward our hotel and a little less insanity.

As we round the Piazale we see all sorts of police and fire personnel activity.  They are roping off some walkways and an entrance to the park area where a statue has fallen off the gate.  How could that happen?  Ed says the only thing that could make it fall would be an earthquake.  I tell him he’s crazy – has to be something else – but…hmmmm…..

CIMG6551CIMG6553CIMG6552

Back at the hotel, after a quick shower (wow! it’s HOT!) and a change of clothes – we’re back out to the grocery store for supplies and scoping for dinner.  A couple of places look good near the hotel – one guy stops us and Ed asks for octopus – we know it’s available –we saw it fresh at a local market this afternoon.  It’s not on the menu but he says he can prepare it for us.  Ok – so – it’s early now – we’ll be back.

We have a couple of drinks on the hotel veranda overlooking the canal, then I take a nap while Ed does his work.

CIMG6560CIMG6562CIMG6565

So – back to Rio Nove we go.  We snag the last table on the canal and proceed to enjoy the now cool evening, the great ambiance and even greater food and service!  Everyone is adorable here – our waiter remembers us and tells us he can prepare Ed’s polipo (octopus), so we order antipasto mixto, verdure griglia (grilled vegetables) and spaghetti con gamberetti e zucchini (crayfish and zucchine in a light red sauce).

CIMG6566CIMG6567

As we eat and drink, one of the other waiters comes up and starts to chat. come to find out there was an earthquake this morning!  It was centered around Bologna and it was felt all the way to Austria and was indeed felt here. He said he was in bed and felt everything shaking and moving! Oh my gosh! we were in the air – thankfully!  But that explains the statue – Ed isn’t crazy – but then again – you all knew that!

We head back to the hotel and grab a beer and wine to enjoy in the garden.  It’s lovely here in the back of the hotel where we’ll have breakfast in the morning before heading off to the ship!

5/28 Harry Potter

Ok – so yeah, we’re in London, but it’s Harry Potter day!!  Our driver is waiting for us at the ship, the ride to the hotel at Gatwick takes about 45 minutes. We hop out – check in – dump our stuff (surprisingly the room is ready at 10AM) – and run for the shuttle bus that takes us to the North Terminal so we can catch the Express Train to Victoria station so we can get on the tour bus at 2PM to go see the studios.  How exciting!!!!
Everything goes off according to plan. We hit the city, find the tour location, find a pub (the Plumbers Arms), have a proper English lunch of fish and chips, scampi and peas (garden, not mushy). Then back we go to stand in line for the bus that will take us to Warner Brothers Studio.
Bus leaves at 2, we’re in line (and quite a ways back, I might add) at 1:30.  We begin to move forward and – drama! They are examining tickets (it’s sold out) and a couple at the front of the line is turned away – he’s embarrassed, she’s crying, he’s trying to hug her, but she’s having none of it.  We can’t figure that one out – did they have the wrong day? Wrong time?  (the tickets can be a little confusing if you don’t read them correctly.)  Who knows, all we know is that we would be crying too if we missed our chance to go see the studio – since this is our only day!
So, all about the Harry Potter express!  Double decker bus – 1 1/2 hour ride out into the way far reaches of the London suburbs to…..the Warner Brothers studios.  This is where every Harry Potter movie was filmed and they’ve set up most of the most memorable props and stages for us to tour.  Oh boy!!CIMG6349
We get there around 3:30; our tickets say we should go in between 4:00 and 4:15 – but we ask if we can go now and they say yes.  Yes! The adventure begins! First we’re corralled into a line that snakes past Harry’s cupboard under the stairs….
CIMG6350CIMG6352

…then we end up in a room with electronic images of different movie posters and a short intro to the studio.  Next its off to a theater where we get additional introductions from the cast and some of the crew. Of course, it’s the movies, so they know how to build excitement and tension….enough talking! Let’s go!
And go we do…..right up to the doors of the main hall at Hogwarts! OMG!  We’re in the great hall!  After that, well, you know, I’ll let the pictures tell the story – let’s just say that it was an incredible, unbelievable, goose-bump, teary eyed kind of experience.  To see all the props, the make up, the costumes (including the continuity), not to mention knowing you are walking through the “real” (yeah, well, you know) sets and places where the HP stories were actually acted out.  As Ed so poetically put it:  Bloody Un Believable!
CIMG6392The mirror of erised…………..
Ok – so – I’m overwhelmed just setting this blog page up. There are so many more photos, so many more things we saw, learned, experienced.  Can’t even begin to explain it, but, truly, one of the highlights of our travels!  Spoken like true HP fans, huh?
