2/18– Whangerei here we are.

We are out of the city pretty quickly, only 2 turns before we are on the highway, and Ed handles the driving beautifully.  It takes about 2 hours to get to Whangerei, first on a 4 lane freeway, then on a 2 lane motorway, then onto 2 lane roads that can be pretty narrow and twisting at times.  We make it into Whangerei proper, and follow the GPS instead of the directions Murray (our “host”) had given. This gives us a chance to see the town a bit, which is nice and allows us to get our bearings a bit.  In the end, we do follow his directions around the “back” of the airport and up onto this “wee” road where the apartment is located.

It’s a beautiful place.  A downstairs flat underneath their house.  Two bedrooms, wonderfully equipped, and  Murray and Jenny think of everything.  They greet us when we come in, give us the tour and hints and tips, plus leave us with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, chocolate treats and home made cookies! Too perfect!  Oh, and the view?  Killer. We can watch the freighters, fishing boats and pleasure craft come right past our windows.  As a matter of fact, we do just that, all afternoon.

We decide to just take today easy.  We hit the grocery store, grab some supplies, a quick lunch of honey, rosemary lamb sausage, some cold cuts, cheese and crackers, then head back to the apartment and spend the afternoon on the patio out back, looking through the incredibly fact packed information binder Murray and Jenny have put together, planning our course of action for the next two days. And of course taking a break here and there to snap more pictures of the incredible view.

We end up staying in for the evening. We had plans to walk down the street to Topsail, one of the top rated restaurants here in the Whangarei area.  But, we’re still stuffed from the ship – and the delicious lamb sausages, so we decide to just snack on cold cuts and catch up on our emails…and of course the blog!  Tomorrow we will head out to explore the wilderness surrounding this lovely harbor front town.
