2/2&3 – Travel day…Lost day

It’s an early morning here in Kihei. We are up and out by 5:45 and headed to Costco for gas. It’s right on the way to the airport, so that’s a no brainer. No lines this early in the morning, and we’re at the Dollar check in lines by 6:25 and at the airport check in desk by 6:45. We’re all good. Heck, we could have made the 7:11 am flight to Honolulu. But, no sense rushing over there since we’ve got a 3 hour layover as it is. We end up hitting the Starbucks (yuk! Only because we have a giftcard that has a balance) and hanging out in the little terminal area with the tile flooring, old fashioned street light and benches that reminds us so much of the Savannah airport.

Our flight is finally called and the 30 minute airtime goes pretty quickly. And then we’re in Honolulu, where we spend the next 2 ½ hours hanging out, charging our phones, searching for an ATM (successfully) and just generally wasting time. Our Sydney flight is jam packed, but we’ve purchased “comfort plus” or some such “upgrade,” so we get on first (well, first in the coach class) and have extra legroom (really nice), USB and electrical outlets and complimentary “premium” movies and entertainment. That works well on a 10 hour flight!

It was a good flight. Food, so so – but really, who needs the carbs and salt? The movies were great – we both watched Girl on a Train (which, yes, Mom, it was totally different from the book – I mean, first of all, it was in New York? Please!), then I watched the Accountant which I enjoyed, and Ed watched North by Northwest and Citizen Kane.

But it passed the time pretty well, and before we knew it, we were in Sydney. Breezed through passport control (which we were a little concerned with since this was not 24 hours after the “testy” phone call between Trump and the PM in Australia). Then breezed through customs with this adorable agent telling us to “come this way, it’s quicker, it’s quicker.” It was!

Hit the ATM and we are out in the Taxi line and in a cab in no time. Got to the hotel around 8:30 – Friday night. It’s so weird crossing the dateline. We left Thursday morning at 8:20 and arrived Friday night at 7:00pm. We’ve been up for 21 hours, and yet, we’ve gained a day, and then lost 3 hours….very confusing! The hotel is nice, great location and the room is a nice studio suite with a full kitchen and little balcony that looks over Hyde Park and the Anzac Memorial. We dump our bags and walk down to the grocery store for snacks and beverages.

Back in the room, we decide we aren’t hungry, we’ve had enough on the plane. So we sit out on the balcony, enjoying the night and looking forward to hitting the sack.
