2/19–Whangarei Dinner at Parau Bay Tavern

We head back to the apartment to cool off and relax for a while, then head off to a relatively early dinner at the Parau Bay Tavern.  This is a great pub that has been recommended by Murray, our host. It is located about 11 KM away on the point around the Bay.  We’ve gone a bit early so we can drive back in the daylight, since these roads are definitely not the easiest to drive and we don’t particularly want to experiment at night.

The Tavern parking lot is packed, so we are a tad worried about getting a seat. But the place is huge, with tons of seating, so there are no worries finding a place.  It’s busy – definitely – but there are so many seats – inside, outside on the half glass/half clear plastic sheeting that can roll down to weather proof terrace, outside on the deck, outside on the lawn, down by the water – it’d be hard not to find a space.

It’s a typical pub. Order at the bar, take your number and sit.  The food is more “gastro-pub” than typical pub grub, and focusing on pizza, but we decide to share salt and pepper squid and fish and chips.  Once again, we should have stuck with only one meal, but, our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs.

Thoroughly stuffed, we waddle out to our car and make our way home.  As we drive down Beach road, the last stretch of road before the apartment, you can see the beautiful water scenery, but also the treacherous road conditions.  This is little more than a one and half lane road with no guardrails and lots of erosion…..20170219_193222_thumb20170219_193250_thumb20170219_193307_thumb

What you probably can’t see is the 5 foot drop off between the edge of the road and the rocky beach below.  No you can see why we didn’t really want to drive this in the dark.

Nonetheless, we make it back safely to the apartment and hang out in the garden until the sunsets, reading and enjoying the nice cool evening breezes.
