1/30-31–Chiang Mai Dash’s Teak House and Cabaret Show

Tuesday 1/31 – Nothing doing today.  We took a quick walk in the heat, then retreated to the condo.  Eggs and toast for lunch, then tonight, Dash’s Teak House.  We tried to make reservations, but got no response from the online form, so we’ll see what happens when we arrive.

We debate taking Uber over to the restaurant, but in the end decide to walk. It’s gotten cooler this evening, so we won’t arrive all hot and sweaty.  As anticipated, though, Dash doesn’t have our booking, but he’s got plenty of room and seats us outside at a nice little two top.

It’s a pleasant evening, and we order slowly to enjoy the atmosphere.  Tom Yum Gai for Ed (which I share too), then Pork Belly and Dash’s nest for our mains.  All really good, and all under the clear, cool evening stars.

We hang out listening to the band and watching the place fill up.  It is definitely a good thing we arrived early! Otherwise, we’d have been looking for Plan B, for certain.  We finally take our leave, wishing Dash luck with Chinese New Year, the one holiday we think he detests more than any other, and wander back to “our side” of town for the evening, stopping at Outlaws for a night cap, then plopping our the sofa to watch Law and Order.

Wednesday 1/31 – Today we eschew the gym and head to Warorot for our exercise. It’s refill day! We are all out of fruit and peanut-y snacks, so we make our pilgrimage through the market, picking up our 50 baht kilo of red skin peanuts, 20 baht kilo of oranges and of course my expensive Jack Fruit (ok so 65 baht isn’t all that much, but it is the most expensive thing on the shopping list!).  We also meander through the upstairs market stalls, filled with clothing and purses and souvenirs.  We don’t think we’ve ever come up here, but since we’ve nothing but time on our hands, we’ll do a little wallet search as we go.

Out on the street, we hit the farther side of the market, which is mostly wholesale toys, clothing and kitchen goods.  It is a nice little diversion to walk through there though – and so much quieter than the produce market side.  But, again, no wallets to be had.  And nothing much else of interest either.  We do hit the clothing store at the beginning of the market road though, and finally break down and buy the elastic elephant pants that every tourist around wears!  We have successfully avoided doing so for years, but have decided that these pants will be best for us in Laos and probably India, since most Wats and Temples require your legs to be completely covered. I actually end up with 2 pairs, Ed 1, but then again, they are 1 size fits all, so really, we have 3 pairs to share.  And at 100 baht each, really, how can you go wrong?

Returning to the condo, we decide to eat lunch out at Lava.  We are the first customers and spend a lovely time out on their front porch in the cool breeze.  I find my new favorite dish:  Moo Tod Gratiem – which is pepper and garlic stir fried pork.  Oh my God!  So good, I google the recipe while we are sitting right there. Ed has a pork omelet, which is huge and tasty and we are both filled and sated for the rest of the afternoon.

Tonight we eat in, stir frying our remaining ingredients, then head out into the streets to view the Blue Blood Full Moon.  Totally cool – pictures – not so much – but the view in the clear night sky is fantastic.

Onto Bamboo for one round, stopping first at my wallet guy, who flashes us this surprised and happy smile when we arrive.  He calls his buddy, who comes running down the road – these guys – I swear – they are incredible how they work!  We end up with 2 awesome wallets, exactly what I wanted, for way less than we did 2 years ago.  Success!

After our drinks we make our way over to the Chiang Mai Caberet show. We haven’t been to the girly boy show in years, and decided tonight would be go to go again.  We get great seats, and the place fills up really quickly.  There is a really fun, young vibe in here tonight as the tables are filled with a few large groups of young Farangs – Canadian or American, can’t really tell. At any rate, it’s rocking and rolling and the performers are great. They are truly just amazing, as we said before, some you’d never know that used to be male..

They have a whole new show too, which is nice, because we were expecting the old acts.  There is a lot of comedy, and they invite guys up on the stage, which is hysterical.

Ed even got into the act, albeit from out seats, when one of the sillier katooeys came by for a smooch.

There is one performance set to “My Way” where the guy changes, on stage, from drag to men’s clothing and takes off all his makeup and wig.  Incredible transformation!  We were too busy watching, enthralled, to take any photos.  But we did get tons of photos of the other acts…

…and the grand finale….

Totally worth it for a very fun evening!
