1/26–Chiang Mai

Friday 1/26 – Back to Warorot this morning for our fruit supplies.  As we are leaving the condo we hear a band playing and we see a parade going down Chan Klang road.  Hmmm…what’s up?  We walk down to find the Catholic school‘s Sports Day Parade in full swing.  Wow! no wonder they are so loud over there – this school is huge. We’ve no idea how many floats and displays we’ve missed, but there are hundreds coming down the street toward us.

The theme this year is Masquerade and the costumes are amazing.  They keep coming and coming down the street, the masquerade ball gowns (which the unbelievably high heels), the pirates, the recycled gowns (totally cool) and  a Hawaiian style band.

We wondered why there wasn’t very much singing over there this morning, now we know.  We also figure that those costumes have to be recycled year after year, they were so amazing and ornate.  But later, we googled the parade to find out more and discover that last year the theme was Nazi Germany complete with Sieg Heil salutes and SS uniforms – needless to say they caused a furor and the school apologized.  Supposedly the kids make the decision on the theme and the teachers know nothing about it until the day of the parade.  So, A) no, those costumes are new every year, and B) We’re thinking they need to step up their History curriculum, particularly when it comes to WWII.

Regardless, it did make for a very fun little morning diversion before the market.  Once at Warorot we search in vain for my wallet, pick up all the supplies on our list, and walk back to the condo, stumbling on another fresh produce market in the night market area.  Must be a new Friday farmers market, because we’ve not seen this before so it isn’t an every day occurrence.  Another option if we need it next week.

After lunch, we return to Rimping for further supplies, then spend the afternoon blogging and reading.

Dinner tonight is Giorgio’s, the Italian restaurant across the street that gets great reviews. He’s been here forever, and we’ve eaten at his other restaurant Antonio’s, but not here.  We figure we’ll give it a shot, going over a little earlier than usual in hopes we’ll get a table without reservations.  We’re lucky and get a table right away (others have a wait later on), feast on some excellent bruschetta as an amuse bouche, then order caprese salad (the freshest mozzarella – we’re thinking they must make it here), minestrone (chock full of vegetables), pork with orange balsamic sauce (completely different and extremely tasty) and Ed gets his pizza jones handled with a sausage pie (very authentic and quite good with crust so thin it virtually melts in your mouth).

Wow. Great meal that leaves us stuffed!  Our dessert is to take pictures of the cat motif around the restaurant as we head back to the condo for the evening.
