1/12-Ultimate Balcony Dinner

Ok, so after all the trips and all blog posts you know I rarely, if ever, post about ship food.  Maybe Azamara (because after all, their food is superb), and I know I posted about the Mud Puppies on RCL. but not normally the dinners.  Here I am breaking my unwritten rule and raving about the Ultimate Balcony Dinner.  It isn’t free, it does cost, but it is so worth it – we can’t believe we haven’t done this sooner!

Sadly, though, tonight our dinner won’t be on the balcony – because remember, we stayed in KK an extra day because of the storm, and as we sail, well, there is definitely a weather system out there and it is way too windy to be out on our cool balcony for dinner. While that is a disappointment, we at least have a large enough room that dinner inside will be a nice affair.  And nice doesn’t do it justice.

We have pre-ordered dinner with our waiter, who came to visit us in our cabin a few days earlier.  So Rommel and his assistant Gede show up at precisely 7:00pm to check out the balcony situation and deliver our hors’ deourves and drinks.

Deeming the balcony too windy, we make plans for our inside meal with Rommel heading out to find another table (and to exchange my wine because they are running very low on Nobilo, and even when you ask specifically for it, they substitute this nasty French Sauv Blanc, or the even nastier California one, and just tell you it is Nobilo – unh uh, not going to fly). We unanimously decide to just eat at the living room table and our feast begins.  The table is set, the roses delivered, the bread basket in place…

…and then the photographer shows up for our personal photo session!  Too fun.  She’s great and takes a slew of pictures that we will see tomorrow and choose the one we like best (or purchase additional ones – but you know us – what will we do with them?).  Then it is on to the meal.  Everything is simply excellent.  First course:  Crab and cheese quiche (far superior than the one in the main dining room the other night)..  Second course:  Salad with goat cheese, candied walnuts and poached pears with a balsamic dressing.  Main course:  Surf and turf (so huge, so perfectly prepared, the steak the perfect temperature, the lobster incredibly nice).

Oh and did I mention the half bottle of champagne that comes along with dinner as well? Excellent meal.  We are totally stuffed – and then comes dessert.  No kidding.  It looks absolutely amazing, 4 different types of mousse crowned with a chocolate roll and raspberries – oh and a side plate of little petit fours.  Oh my gosh – there is no way we are going to even touch that!  We are so stuffed we had to save half my steak for snacks later.

Thoroughly delicious and thoroughly filling.  That was a great dinner, and one we will do again if we ever sail Princess in the future.
