Onward we press, into the old city, on our search for more murals. We pass a couple of hawkers stalls, and this one restaurant, the Da Shu Xia seafood House, that is supposed to have the seafood displayed in trays out front, where you just pick out what you want and they fry, grill, steam or “soup” it up for you. Maybe an option later, but it is so early that nothing is open right now. Just gives us more time to find the art!
Even though the map identifies the basic street and location of the art, you still have to do a little sleuthing. We found the swinging kids only after back tracking, and searching down an alley-like street. And we stumbled upon this little dancing guy, quite by accident– he’s not on the map.
So now, on our hunt for the I want Bao kids, we keep our eyes open for alleys and other little nooks and crannies where the mural may be lurking. But not to worry here – the mural is right out on Armenian street, easily found since the trikeshaw tours are there already! Success.
Further up the street is the cat area – which is appropriate because there are lots of cats and kittens (real live ones) wandering around the streets.
We find three of the four cat murals plus this great cartoon guy asking you to speak Hokkien. Some are in better shape than others – the giant cat really needs some upkeep, but they are all still pretty amazing.
In addition to the wall art, the architecture in this area is also beautiful. A mix of oriental and colonial.
It is here we begin to see some of the steel-rod caricatures from the “branding” project. The narrowest alley and the Armenian Street entrance.
Our next mural to find is the Little Children on a Bicycle, and, again, as we are searching, we stumble on other artwork tucked away in an alley off of Armenian street.
We manage to find the Lion Dance, but those darn children are too elusive and are evading us.
Somehow in our searching, we have managed to get turned around. I was aiming for the murals, and also the Chinese Heritage area, but have only managed to find the heritage area. We can’t figure out the stupid map, and are getting a little frustrated trying. So, since we have managed to find the Acheen Street Mosque…
…we can at least get our bearings back and head to the Khoo Kongsi clan temple – which was part of our plan.
