1/27-28–Chiang Mai

Saturday 1/27 – we stayed in all day today, not even venturing out for a walk.  Stir fry squid and chicken for dinner, then wandered through the Night Market looking for gifts and the ever illusive wallet.  Ended up at Bamboo, of course, where Jes Ca was happy to see us and Patrick was playing – turns out it was not the same Patrick, however.

We spend the evening listening to Patrick, talking to Jes Ca – she says business is down this year too (well 2017 as well – not just the few days of 2018) and enjoying the music.  The other singer comes on again after Patrick (don’t know his name), but he is equally as good – so we end up hanging out until well after 11 just chilling.

As we were leaving, we noticed a night market vendor right outside Bamboo that has Imperial Horse men’s wallets.  Since I’ve been totally unsuccessful in my hunt for my Woman’s wallet, we show it to him and ask if he has any. He says he will call his vendor and have some for us tomorrow night.  That works, we’re here all the time anyway, so, hopefully the wallet quest will be fulfilled tomorrow.

Sunday 1/28 – No sleeping in this morning.  The church is in full swing over there about 6:15am.  That loud speaker is blaring, and we can hear it even through these windows.  What are they doing?  It doesn’t sound like mass – and it goes on forever!  Ed says it sounds more like the Jerry Springer Show in Thai.  That is the one and only negative of this condo – that infernal loudspeaker!  So, we’re up!  Guess we’ll just head to the gym.

Lunch is Butter is Better so Ed can have his corned beef on rye, which looks really delicious (even though I’m not a corned beef fan).  I get the BBQ pulled pork – might as well, I know it’s good!

And we have a lovely meal, listening to a group of 8 younger Americans (two with little infant babies) chit chat about teaching (we think- pretty sure they are here teaching). On our way home, we take a long walk detour down to see if Tawans, the place with the great happy hour, is still there.  It is, just closed today. But also, there is a huge sign out front advertising the sale of the restaurant as well as living quarters and a private room upstairs.  Ooooh, a business opportunity.  Not!  We’ll come back another day and see if we can find out what the scoop is.

As we are heading back to the condo, we pass by Mr. Clip It Barbershop.  Ed needs a trim so we pop in and he gets a great Thai trim up for under $5.  Eyebrows, neck shaved, powder brush, the whole 9 yards. The place is some repurposed retail shop, where they’ve placed 2 barber shop chairs (one with flashing lights circling the base), these ingenious full length mirrors that are actually large mirrored closet doors propped up against the wall, a sofa for waiting customers, and a camp chair (those folding ones that you take to events) as the barber’s desk chair. Perfect!

Dinner is stir fry, then off to the  market for my wallets.  Unfortunately, the place to get the wallets is closed on Sunday, so he couldn’t get anything.  He’ll have it there for us tomorrow, he says.  Once again, ok, it’s a short walk and a drink for us at the end of it, so we’re not complaining.  We have a  beverage or two with Jes Ca and then we call it an evening.
