6/9–Copenhagen Afternoon

We hung out in the room long enough to realize that we need to get up and move – get coffee, do something. So we wander out to explore a little bit and get our systems up and moving again.  There is a great coffee spot right down the block, on the corner of the street, with lovely tables and umbrellas outside in the sun.

We snag a prime table and order a cappuccino and a hazelnut latte. We won’t discuss the price (ugh), we need the caffeine and it is what it is here in Denmark (and for the rest of the trip as we move through Norway).  The coffees are great – and my latte comes in a huge water glass.  Cool!  Well, not really, it’s really, really hot, so you need to use a coffee cup sleeve to drink it!

The sun and the caffeine work wonders for us – and as we finishing up our drinks, here come Maggi and Richard, fresh from their adventures exploring Copenhagen. Perfect timing!  After catching up a little bit, we make plans to meet back at the hotel for dinner, then they head back to the hotel for a rest and we strike out to explore the neighborhood and hit the little bar Maggi and Richard have found for an afternoon adult beverage.

The hotel is located in a great, central area.  We are within easy walking distance of tons of little restaurants, cafes and bars.  Plus, the Rosenborg castle is only about 2 blocks away, and Nyhavn, the popular and busy harbor area is 3 blocks the other way.  Perfect for wandering and exploring the city.

We find a couple of grocery stores so we can grab some beer and wine for the room, then head to the bar/cafe.  It’s a perfect place to sit and watch the world go by. There are little bistro tables in the open windows, nee terrace, so we soak up more sun while we enjoy our beer and wine.

Later, we meet for dinner and scour the cafes, ending up at Amarone – the Italian restaurant Maggi and Richard enjoyed the previous night.  We all tuck in to hearty meals of Pizza for the guys, Seafood salad for Maggi and Caprese salad for me.

The owner is a love, she’s so welcoming and friendly, as  we quiz her on Italian words for things we’ve either forgotten or don’t know.  After dinner we head to what can now be referred to as the “Beckstoffer/Stevens bar” – or “our bar” – for a night cap.

We’re bushed, the sleepless plane ride has taken its toll, so we make plans to meet tomorrow at 1 to tour the castle, then bid Maggi and Richard a fond good night and head to our comfy bed where (after making sure the curtains are tightly closed and there is no way light can seep in) we fall into an exhausted and much needed sleep.
