6/8-9–Travel day and Copenhagen

First time flying out of Atlanta.  It’s about a 4 hour drive, and it is worth it for the connections and the price of flights.  At least on this trip.  We fly out at 4 (which is early for a Europe flight), and we are at the airport early – early enough that we can go to the Priority lounge to eat and drink and make the entrance fee worthwhile. Sunny enjoyed it – so really, that’s all that matters!

Our first flight to Frankfurt didn’t show as full a few days ago, and they kept losing my seats, so Ed called every day to get me my seat back – and in the process we got moved up to bulk head, which we figured would be good for an overnight flight.  We packed our carryon bags accordingly, with little bags to keep out when we put everything up in the overhead bins.  As it turns out, the flight is packed. And worse yet, with kids everywhere.  And I mean little kids – as in babies.  Oh no –not on an overnight!  To add insult to injury – we don’t actually have bulkhead – we are one row back – with a baby and bassinette in the bulkhead.  Ick.

All in all, it wasn’t too terrible of  a flight. We still didn’t sleep much, but it was more our doing than the babies (although there was one crier behind us).  The flight attendant was great – he kept us in beer and wine, even giving me wine from business class that was quite good.  So, hey, we survived it and made it to Frankfurt fairly unscathed.  We flew SAS to Copenhagen. Short flight, this time we actually did have exit row and only 2 seats – which was cool.  So we had comfort for an hour or so. Immigration and baggage was seamless in Copenhagen, and we were out at the taxi stand in no time.  No one else was in line, so we hopped into the first cab and were off, arriving at the hotel a little after noon.

Of course the room wasn’t ready, but we checked in, did all the paperwork, then put our luggage in a locker and struck off toward the Kastellet to go to the Resistance Museum.  We’d had the brochure for the museum since the last time we were here, and thought it would make for a nice afternoon.  The hotel is centrally located – easy access to everything – so we struck out on a quick 10 minute walk to the museum location.

We get to the park and stroll around the perimeter to where the map shows the museum.  Nothing.  Hmmm… We look around, turning in circles, it should be right here.  There is nothing but an empty lot with some debris – and a workman doing something in the middle.

As we turn to leave, we spy a sign, and lo and behold, the darn thing has burned down! In 2013! Crud.  We console ourselves with a few pictures of the old church behind the burnt out museum site….

….then it is time for Plan B.  Let’s get something to snack on.  We look at the Polse (hot dog) food truck, but we’re not really in the mood for $5 hot dogs.  Luckily we stumble upon Restaurant LeLe – a Vietnamese food truck.  Yes!  Even though more expensive than the Polse, we can’t resist the lure of the pulled chicken Banh Mi.  We split one, while enjoying the beautiful weather along with the scenery around the moat of the Kastellet.

Now that we have some food energy stored up, we decide to head back to the hotel, via Amalienborg, the royal residence.  The guards are out and about, making their rounds, so that was a neat little find.

Then we make a detour to the Marble Church, which is one huge and gorgeous piece of architecture….

…then back to the hotel to check in and settle into our little room.
