6/14–Alesund afternoon–Aksla

On the way to the museum, we had noticed signs for Aksla, but from the opposite direction, there weren’t any, so we relied on Alice who got us going in the right direction – until we found signage and followed directions up the hill.

We lucked out at bottom of the drive to the lookout when we found a bus in front of us. Normally, not something we’d want to follow, but the road to the lookout is one lane – two way traffic, but only a little more than one lane wide. So following the bus was great – everyone pulled over and got out of the way – and we just followed in the wake.

The only challenge was when we arrived at the lookout – it was absolutely jam packed with people, cars and every sort of bus imaginable.  Fortunately there were a bunch of guys trying to direct traffic, and they found us the one remaining parking space up there.  Yay!

Now we can take in the view and not have to worry about the car for a bit.  And it is a spectacular view – especially on a day like today.

IMG_8826 Picture taking done, we navigate back down the mountain (all the way down the road with only 1 bus coming our way – beautiful) and then try to make our way to the rental car office.  Alice sends us right through town, and on a little tour, but unfortunately, the road we need to use is blocked off for some reason. Drats!  Thus ensues a 10  minute back tracking, with lots of “make a u-turn at your earliest convenience” type of instructions.  Finally we turn her off, make our u-turn and go back down to the road along the water and finally make our way back to Hertz.

Dropping the car, we hit the grocery store for chocolate (for Krizzy our adorable breakfast/lunch server who didn’t get a chance to get chocolate in Geiranger) and then wander around the town a bit looking at the Nouveau architecture.  After our explorations, we’re all a bit hungry, so we head back to the ship for lunch and relaxation before we sail on to  Trondheim tomorrow.
