6/10 Copenhagen Afternoon

Back to the hotel we go, meandering through the little market at Kongens Nytorv circle.

We rendezvous with Maggi & Richard at the appointed time and head over to the Rosenborg Castle and its beautiful manicured gardens.

Built as a pleasure palace for Christian IV in the early 1600s, it was the King’s favorite residence.  Eventually the palace became a place for kings to place their finest and rarest objects, and no longer a residence, was actually turned into a public museum in 1838.

Inside the castle, the ground floor the art and the style of living are all on display through winter and writing rooms, the king’s chamber and the queen’s chamber.  There is one of the first indoor toilets, and loads and loads of magnificent furniture and little oddities such as the bird cage clock.

Some of the best architectural features were  the plaster ceilings. These were mostly all 3D – with flowers or cherubs or little displays of fruit (horns of plenty) hanging down in bas relief.

The tower rooms off the Great Hall were really amazing.  Particularly the “glass cabinet,” an whole room filled entirely with glass Frederik IV received on a trip to Venice and other pieces he collected on his way home.  The room was arranged in 1714 and never changed since.  It was incredible. I was particularly taken by the glass utensils!

The Great Hall also is home to the 3 silver lions (made in 1670 of narwhal tusk and silver) that guard the royal’s thrones.  Sunny was dying to ride one of them, but we thought the guards might frown upon that, so he stayed tucked safely away for the time being.

We finished our tour with the Royal Treasury where we viewed the crown jewels and other various and assorted royal jewelry...

…and emerged back out into the gardens into the sunshine.

We meandered through the gardens, enjoying the weather and the wildlife…

…then headed to “our bar” for an afternoon aperitif.

Later that evening we once again went to Nyhavn for food.  There are so many restaurants to choose from, it was a tough decision, but we finally settled on a place that had a “buffet”".”  We thought that was the most reasonable value.  Unfortunately, the food on the buffet didn’t look all that appealing (overcooked meats and wilted vegetables) so the 3 carnivores all ended up with burgers and Maggi a salad.  They burgers were good – but once again – the price!  Ended up being $24.50 each.  Sigh.  We’ve been fed – that’s all that matters!

We end our evening at the hotel, getting ready for our embarkation day on tomorrow.
