2/1–2/7–What did we do for a week?

Who knows!  We’ve read a lot, walked all over town a lot, gone to the Warorot market a lot, gone out to dinner a lot….in general have done nothing much….a lot!  Here are some pictures from the not a lot we have done!

Sushi lunch from Rimping Grocery store – buy 5 pieces, get 1 free!IMG_1838

Dinner at Silver Eagle – the Indian restaurant in Ansuran Market.  One of the waiters stands on the corner every day handing out flyers with 10% discount, so we figured, what the heck!  As it turns out – we were the only ones there and  the owner was there and treated us wonderfully. They’ve only been open for 4 months, food was fabulous and reasonably priced – definitely going back before we leave.  Below – Chicken Rajanjosh on the left, Butter Chicken on the right. Accompanied by awesome garlic Naan.  Yum!

Walked into town to go to the Chiang Mai gate market, just as something different to do, wandered there, then tried to go have a drink at the Garden Restaurant, where we have been a few times before because it is located in the middle of the Sunday Walking Street. They weren’t open yet, so we ended up at John’s Place – on the moat road, then wandered through the Tha Pae gate area where they were beginning to decorate for the Flower Festival this weekend.

For dinner, we went to the Israeli restaurant, Sababa, just down the road from our condo.  Every night when we are walking home, I dance with some man there – he’s always on the patio, and when he sees me he starts to dance, so I do too.  Hey, when in Thailand at the Israeli restaurant….At any rate, my dancing partner isn’t there when we are, but the owner is – and he is as wonderful and welcoming as the Indian restaurant owner.  We sit on the patio – because it is cool outside and always entertaining, though it’s pretty loud with the traffic noise, –

- and order the house specialty – Shawarma sandwiches (which are delectable) and a side order of Baba Ganush (which the owner makes sure to tell us he makes fresh for us –and oh it is absolutely fantastic!).

We hit O’Malley’s one night so Ed can have his mushroom burger fix. The thing is still the size of Chiang Mai – and we should have split it because I had the chicken sandwich which is big too! Stuffed!

Roadside bar was next – for our evening music stop.

Our cute little bartender was not there so we didn’t have any Thai language lessons, and I couldn’t tell her that we had bought the nose oil stuff she made us try. Long story – one night sitting there, listening to the band, she got out this little bottle of oil, put some on her fingers and rubbed at the base of her nose.  I must have looked confused, so she whipped out the bottle, put drops on my finger and mimed for me to rub it in my nose. OMG – it’s like Mentholatum and peppermint and it totally clears up your sinuses.  Nice!  I asked her to write down the name of it, in Thai of course, and we found some the other day while we were in town.  20b for a bottle, so we picked up 2.  It’s great! But, regardless, she’s not there, so I’ll have to show her another night,

Walking home from Roadside we passed the creepy, scary bunny statue.  Yikes. This thing just gives me the willies – it’s so “Bunny-Man” it’s not even funny (all of you from NoVa will remember the bunny man story – yeah, I know, the 3 people – for those of you not familiar – email me! I’ll fill you in!).  I try to avoid it whenever possible, but  its on one of the main roads home, so it’s hard to avoid!

We’ve been to Warorot market what seems about a million times, will, at least 3x this week! Never fails to amaze us the food and everything. We’ve restocked our oranges for the last time, bought the best strawberries (it’s strawberry season – all of a sudden, all the strawberry vendors show up with berries piled high – and oh so orderly….see below…)

…picked up Sai Ua sausage for Ed…

……stocked up on the rice cracker cookies I love (bringing them home – hopefully in one piece), found a fabulous wallet I love (I’m going back to get another one as a back up) and were over there early enough on Saturday (see the next post) that we got to see all the meat and seafood vendors in action!

Finally, went back to Dash’s Teak House. Crazy busy, but Dash sort of, but not really, remembered us so he took pity on us and let us sit at the bar, then gave us a table that was reserved at 8:30.  We promised to be done by then – and were – excellent chicken wings, papaya salad,  huge stuffed omelet with pork (hands down the best we’ve had) and pad thai.  Yum Yum!

Walked over to Tiger Kingdom in town, listened to a different band, who were equally fabulous, then caught a Tuk Tuk home.

So – that’s what we’ve done for a week!

Next up – the Flower Festival!
