1/10 – Let the rain begin

Monday morning – dawns cloudy and threatening and we know the rain is coming. The forecast is for downpours and wind later in the day so we plan accordingly.

We’re out walking as soon as possible, it’s really windy – but hey – it’s good resistance!  It’s so windy though that even the normal fisherman aren’t out in the park this morning.  I’m thinking it’s too windy and choppy for the whales too, but I’m mistaken because on our way back through the park we see some great whale breaches and a tail slap – close enough to really see it!  Totally cool! We even have the camera with us – but of course – it’s WAY too hard to capture.  See below…..that little splash there? That’s just after the breach!  :)

Walking back to the house, I finally got a great pix of the driveway below:

It’s a Martini glass etched into the concrete!  Way funny!

Back to the house – where we spend the day alternately reading, working and of course blogging!  It’s rainy, it’s clearing, it’s windy, it’s pouring.  Just your basic tropical day!

Out for dinner – we go to Moose McGillycuddy’s because they have free wings with 2 dinners.  Plus a late happy hour.   Oh – what an adventure!  It’s pouring, their lot is tiny and there isn’t a space to be had.  We manage to pull in and out, then drive around for 10 minutes and luckily pull in and get the last remaining spot – way at the back of the lot.  By this time it is a monsoon!  We get thoroughly drenched by the time we are in the door.  And the place is packed to the gillycuddys!  LOL – couldn’t resist!

We manage to snag a place at the bar, just by luck and circumstance, and settle in.  the front part of the restaurant doesn't have a fixed roof, it’s covered with a removable tarp like structure that can probably be opened up during good weather. Well, tonight, it’s being whipped and slapped by the wind and the water is pouring through there.  That whole side of the restaurant – and bar is closed and virtually underwater.

Then the lights flicker – and that’s it!  The bartenders close out all the tabs and everything else is cash and carry in case the power goes out.  Everyone is there for the Tostito bowl, so when the lights flicker, they are freaking out. Fortunately, the power stays on as do the TVs and all is well.

Although as we were sitting there, we found out that Lahaina and Napili (the resort areas) were without power, and the road to Lahaina was closed due to high water.  Yikes!  We ate our food – great wings and Kahlua pork sandwich!  and drank our happy hour drinks, and by the time we wanted to go home, it had stopped raining.  Phew. We’ve just about dried out.

The roads are hazardous though – there is water ponding everywhere and you really have to drive carefully.  There is more rain and another stronger cold front coming on Wednesday – so we are planning our touring accordingly.  Tomorrow – the Road to Hana!
