1-7/9 Weekend fun

Friday night in Maui. We’re back at home after Lahaina, and walking through the park. Great night to do it, cool, a little breezy. Watching the paddle surfers – and – oh – this is why we should always have a camera! There is a guy with his dog on the surf board. Paddling out into the waves – the dog just standing there at the end of the surfboard. How cool is that?

We clean up and head into Wailea to Mulligan’s on the blue – and honest to goodness Irish owned Irish bar in the golf club house of the Wailea golf course. There’s local singer there we want to see – as well as some dinner entrees we want to try. 15 minutes and we’re there – easy drive. It’s all open air, as most every place is, so we can sit at the bar with our favorite beverages, a fresh breeze coming through the doors, listening to this great acoustic vocalist. Too fun.

Dinner is great. Ed has the fish and chips, which are very good. I have the Tuna burger, which is a mixture of fresh Ahi tuna, spices, green onion and egg, sautéed just right with a really good citrus cilantro chili sauce. Too good! A great way to start the weekend, hanging out, listening to the music, enjoying the night air. Tomorrow – football!

Saturday is a lazy day – we’re doing the football thing all day – walking in the morning, waking up, watching football at 11:30 am. A little odd – but it’s only a little early for football. Great games – and we sit outside in the sun during quarter breaks and halftime. After the first game, we take the bikes out and just cruise up Kihei road for a bit, making sure the bikes fit us well.

For the second game, we decide to head up to Ocean’s and hang there for a while with $2.50 beers. a fun little change in the routine. Then home again, finish watching the game and it’s still early. So, we eat in, then head to the “Barmuda” Triangle of Maui –it so reminds us of Hilton Head – the same collection of bars and restaurants, just a little more, how shall we say it? Hippie-ish? Earth Muffinish? Hey –when in Maui….

We land at Kahale’s (yes Nicole – it’s almost like Kanaly’s in HHI!!! Well, in name only!). This place is just wild. It’s a teeny little shack – basically – but what personality. The crowd was a mix between old hippie, young hippie, young locals and older visitors (actually a couple we saw at Mulligan’s in Wailea came into Kahale’s when we were there!). It was just a wild collection of every type of person on the island. People watching heaven! And so many friendly people - we felt right at home. We even met Ken, who owns Alexander's, a little restaurant on the main road with a great rep for fish and chips and fish tacos - and of course my namesake! - you know we'll be there one day soon!!! The band, the Eight Track Players, was great too. Played all sorts of fun dance songs and kept the place hopping for hours. A definite hang out when we want a beer, good company and good music (oh, yeah, beer, only Chardonnay for wine, which I’ve found a couple of places – so yes, everyone sit down, I’m drinking a lot of beer lately. Sigh…)

Sunday – we’re up early – football starts at 8:00am! Oy! Who ever heard of drinking coffee and waking up with football on the TV? Guess it’s something you need to get used to is you’re here permanently. It’s pretty odd! So – we watch the first game, BORRINNGGG. It’s a gorgeous day, so we decide to strike out and do a bit of the upcountry.

We head out toward Pa’ai, a little town that began life as a sugar plantation town, but is now a cross between hippie town and chic little boutique village. It’s packed – it’s Sunday after all – so we pass through and head up to milepost 9 for the scenic lookout where you can usually catch surfers and kite surfers. Wellllll….today it is way more packed than Pa’ai! There is a surfing competition going on and it’s worth our life to find a parking spot. We finally do manage to stuff the little Versa into a slot and head out to watch the action. wow! these waves are huge – probably not as huge as they were the past week when the surf was really bad, but it’s still pretty wild to watch. One poor guy even broke his surf board in half! Bummer dude!

Next we head out of Pa’ia and into Upcountry – just a bit. We swing up Baldwin avenue, winding up through the fields of sugar cane (think it’s sugar cane!) and past lovely houses out in the middle of nowhere, but with a fantastic view of the mountains, valleys and water – and into Makawao. Supposedly an original cowboy town, it’s now just like all the other little cutesy tourist towns – looks like it’s western – there are hitching posts on the sidewalk – but no self respecting cowboy (or paniolo in Hawaiian) would ever find themselves here. It’s a beautiful little town in the middle of the hills though – and a nice respite from our drive. we wander the streets and end up in the glassblower studio to watch a demonstration (gee…sort of like Murano in Venice! :) Then we’re off – heading back down the mountain to town.

We pit stop at the mall for the .99 cent store – pick up a few miscellaneous items, then spy a Mexican restaurant with the football game on. So…well…what can we say? We watch the end of the game with 2 cold Dos Equis (YAY Green Bay!!! Sorry Michael!!), then head off to Long Drugs for nose spray (yes, I’m sick – again! I’m convinced it was the cute little brat that sat across from us on the Richmond-Chicago flight. Adorable lap child, but sneezing her cute little blonde head off while she was walking down the aisle), then our final stop at Costco for a few more supplies.

Back home, we walk, watch the sunset –

and then retire back to our cottage for a great meal of chicken, chorizo and cheese, while I try to blow out this silly cold. Gotta love traveling sicknesses. Next time, I’m seriously wearing a mask on that darn plane!
