Travel day – and what a loooooonnnnngggg day it was! First flight out of Richmond at 7:48am, landed in Maui at 4:30p HST, which is 9:30 EST. Flights all went off without a hitch – all arriving early – early enough in San Fran to allow us to get a bite to eat so we didn’t have to pay an arm and a leg for boxed or plastic wrapped junk on the plane. (FYI – I had a ham and cheese omelet – which surprisingly enough, went very well with the Pinot Grigio I chose for a beverage!!).
Once in Maui, we got our little Versa rental car and headed off on our shopping trip. To Costco – where the beer and wine were the same price as at home! We were SHOCKED! And great prices on tons of sausages – like Chorizo and Portuguese sausage (turns out there’s this huge Portuguese influence here and there are a couple of brands of sausages made right here on the island. cool!!!) Oh yeah, and a HUGE bag of Kona Chocolate Macadamia nut coffee. Yay!
So, after spending a fortune (even at good prices) at Costco, we headed out to Kihei, about 30 minutes South, where we’ll be staying for our 3 week adventure. On the way to the cottage – we stopped at Safeway to fill in on necessities, like produce, eggs, etc. Oh – that was eye opening, let me tell you. We were so happily surprised at the Costco prices, we were not very happy at Safeway – OMG! When they say it’s expensive to live here – they aren’t kidding. You have to buy the sale items or forget it. The regular coffee – and I’m talking Folgers – normal 30+ oz container size - $14. Kid you not! Wow! So – we stocked up – but carefully.
Finally, we’re headed to our little Ohana (the Hawaiian word for an attached cottage). Very easy to find, right off the main drag in S. Kihei. Pulled into the driveway – and opened the gate (finally! a gated community! LOL) – and found our way out back to the Ohana. It is the most precious little 1 bedroom cottage! And talk about equipped. Everything you’d ever need – right down to all the spices in the kitchen and coolers and snorkel sets for the beach. Fabulous!
After calling the property manager – who is the owner too – and getting settled in, we decide to have some food – it’s now going on about 9pm HST (2am EST) and we’re not as exhausted as you’d think – but it’s time for food and bed. Chorizo scrambled eggs. Yummy snack before hitting the hay.
Tomorrow – we explore!
