1/24–Beach Day at Po’olenalena

We’re going back to our favorite beach today – Po’olenalena, between the Wailea resorts and Makena.  We pack up our beach chairs and beach bag – this condo is totally equipped with everything you’d need, including the Cadillac of beach chairs that has a cooler built into the back of the chair – and head out to enjoy the surf, sand and sun.

We arrive before 9:30, and the place is, as we expected, not crowded.  We plunk ourselves down in our usual spot under the shade of the trees and enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts.

Because last it will not.  As we hang out, we get to watch the procession of wave after wave of people hauling their life’s possessions down to the shore.  It’s quite entertaining.  This one group hauled tons of stuff to the beach, and then one of the guys says he’s going back for the rest of the stuff?  Really? What could possibly be left?  Obviously a lot – he comes walking back to the beach with a huge tupperware like container (with snorkel gear, I think) and tons of other paraphernalia stacked high.  Sheesh.  I thought I over did it by bringing the beach towels I knew we’d never use…but…just in case!

The comical thing though, was that virtually everyone had the same Tommy Bahama Cadillac chairs that we did!  And I mean everyone – we’re talking about maybe 30 people who had them, and 4 who did not.  Big seller here in Hawaii.

So, we got our half day of beach lounging in – then headed back to the condo for the rest of the afternoon in the shade. Don’t want to overdo the sun too much.

Dinner tonight is at Ohana, right around the corner.  They have a happy hour menu that looked good, but they are actually known for their calamari.  People say its the best on the island.  We end up selecting the steak tacos from the happy hour menu, which are stuffed full of excellently prepared steak, and very tasty. Then we dig into a mound full of perfectly battered and fried calamari, drizzled with an excellent sweet and sour sauce.  Yummy. That’s a keeper – and maybe even a repeat.

Back at the condo we are dazzled by the sunset as we sit on the lanai and pass the evening away.
