1/19–Another long travel day

4:30 am comes early!  Phew.  But, we are up (Ed was up all night practically) and on our way to airport at 5:15.  First time out of Asheville, and it is a breeze.  Love small, intimate little airports!  Security is a breeze as well – we’re pre-check so we get our little pass the infrared radar scan cards and waltz right through.  Grab another cup of coffee and before we know it, we’re on the plane to Atlanta. Now that’s a fast flight! We’re in final descent before we really even get up to cruising altitude.  Smile

The four hour layover in Atlanta goes by pretty quickly – we (meaning Ed) has breakfast at Longhorn’s, then I spend the next hour or so working while waiting at the gate.  Boarding goes smoothly, and then off we go for the long flight.  But surprisingly enough, it wasn’t too hateful.  We watched a couple of movies – both of us watched Deepwater Horizon, which just ended up making both of us really angry. Callous disregard for human life in the name of corporate profits.  Argh.  Then I watched Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which I enjoyed, and Ed enjoyed Nixon and Elvis.  We spent the rest of the time reading and trying to snooze a little (unsuccessfully).

We were incredibly impressed with this Delta crew as well – totally friendly and happy and nice.  Plus we actually get a meal (a good one too – grilled chicken over salad greens)– so refreshing to be able to have something other than the heavily sauced meat and over cooked vegetables - and 2 snacks on this flight.  And complimentary beer and wine.  Nice! So we manage to make it through the 9 1/2 hours pretty easily. And are rewarded with a great fly over Pearl Harbor.

Once in Honolulu we walk off our stiffness when we make our way to the inter-island terminal which is at the total opposite end of the airport.  It’s about a 10 minute walk, which is nice after being cramped on the plane for so long.

The flight to Maui is a breeze as well and the scenery from the plane is awesome!  Waikiki, Diamond Head, and the coast of Maui.  Yay! Finally here!

The car rental joint is a zoo though.  It takes us nearly an hour to get through the line and into our car.  That was annoying!  But we are finally on our way. First stop Safeway for food and beer and wine – then onto the condo which is just great.  Top floor of the building – two lanais for a cross breeze and two different views.  Fantastic!

We make our traditional first night Hawaii dinner of scrambled eggs and chorizo (its the quickest and easiest thing to make – plus they have TONS of chorizo and sausage selections here, which we love), and sit on the lanai while we eat, enjoying the fresh breeze.  We’ve been up for almost 24 hours, but we’re both feeling great – which is a little unusual, but we’re not complaining. We’re in Maui – we’re happy.
