1/21–Women’s March Maui Style

The alarm is annoying as it beeps incessantly at 6am, but we know the wake up will be worth it so that we can make the Women’s March here. We’re trying to follow the DC march, but no one is showing it on the TV – should I even comment about the state of our Journalism today?

We manage to find some tweets and posts, and understand it is so packed people can’t get on the Metro. Wow!  That’s amazing!

We’re in a little bit better position here – a 25 minute drive, then we can park right on the University of Hawaii’s lot for the allotted meeting time of 7:45. The drive is easy, the line to get onto campus really long, but the parking is ample.  And good thing – because there are probably about 2000 people here at the end!  What a great turn out!

We all amass on the front lawn and have a moment of silence at the same time as Gloria Steinem announces it in DC. Everyone holds up their signs – some of the greatest slogans!

Our particular favorites were:  “Impeachment is one tweet away,” “girls just want to have FUNdamental rights,”  “Free Melania,” “We shall overcomb,” “Tweet women with with respect.” And of course the guy who wore a white t-shirt with “This is what a feminist looks like” printed in black magic marker on the front.  Fantastic!

The presentation was moving – the crowd amazing.  It rained, the wind blew, the sun came out, a rainbow arced over head showering its good will down upon us.

And we marched.

What a fantastic event. Thank you to the organizers. The volunteers. The participants.  Here on the islands, throughout the rest of our country and across the world – we are sending a message.  But as wonderful as this demonstration is – we need to continue to send the message, today and tomorrow and get out and make a difference.  Not just a stand.

In the words of “My Shot” from Hamilton:  The Revolution-

“Come on, let’s go
Rise up
When you’re living on your knees, you rise up
Tell your brother that he’s gotta rise up
Tell your sister that she's gotta rise up……

….We are not throwing away our shot!”
