1/20–Lazy first day in Maui

Jet lag – or the reverse thereof.  We are both up at 5:00am – or even before.  Ugh.  But – we’re awake, so coffee goes on and we sit on the lanai and drink it while watching the sky lighten little by little with the sunrise.

We are completely ignoring the inauguration.  Which is a little hard to do, but we have the TV off and aren’t really looking at the news websites too much.  We head out for our morning walk around the park across the street.  It’s the same park we walked around every day when we were here in 2011 – this time we are just located at the opposite end of the park, by the little bay area where they put in the surfers and paddle boarders.

Next on the agenda is heading back to Safeway for the their $5 Friday sale.  We forgot about those!  And let me tell you, its worth it to go back.  The prices here are sky high on most things (particularly fruit and vegetables) so any deals you can get are appreciated.  We pick up pork tenderloin, deli ham, peanuts, pepsi and coffee – seriously $5 for coffee – that’s cheaper than on the mainland! Then after our little spree, head over to Foodland to complete our food purchases with… POKE.  Oh my gosh, I’ve been longing for Poke for so long, I can not wait to get some. And Foodland is by far the best.  Shopping accomplished we head back to the condo to organize and get ready for lunch….

….which isn’t for another hour or so, although it seems like we should eat NOW because we’ve been up for so long. And, well, on second thought, who cares.  I’m eating the Poke NOW…I can’t wait!

First Poke lunch on the lanai – and it doesn’t disappoint.  Ahi Shoyu, Spicy Ahi with avocado and Tako Hawn (octopus) for Ed.  You literally have to take the little tubs away from me so I don’t eat the whole thing in one sitting.  I could live on this stuff (and generally do when we are here!).

After lunch we decide to head over to Lahaina for a bit.  Just to get out and do something, and get our bearings back – although it’s really easy to get around on this island, and it feels like home to us anymore.

Traffic isn’t all that bad and we end up there around 11:30.  We manage to find a parking space in one of the free 3 hour lots (well, it is sort of a space, it probably wasn’t designed to be an actual space – right next to the entrance and up against a tree – but we’re taking another car’s place – and well, it is the only space in the lot, so….we’re hoping the car will be there when we return).

We wander down Front Street, weaving our way in between all the tourists.  It’s packed here, you’d think there was a ship in port today, but we know there isn’t – its just a normal day in Lahaina.  When you get right down to it, there really isn’t anything of interest to us here.  After the 5th or 6th jewelry store – and the cute Israeli guys who accost me and drag me into the skin care store to put stuff under my eyes – we decide there’s nothing here for us, and we turn around and head back to the car.  It was at least a nice little drive and outing.

On the way back to Kihei, we decide to hit Costco for a few things.  That place is always a zoo – but we figure it will be better today than Saturday – which was our original plan.  It’s still a zoo – out of control people everywhere – but you can see why. The prices are the best on the island. I pick up a couple of bottles of the Kirkland Pinot Grigio for $7.99, which is normal mainland price.  Can’t beat it.

Once out of the scrum, we head back to our little lanai perch in Kihei, watching the volleyball games across the street in he park, people watching the walkers and the traffic and all the goings on here on the South side of the island.

For dinner tonight, we head to Three’s Bar and Grill, which is in the triangle (Barmuda triangle) a mere block and a half away.  They have a good happy hour in the lounge, and we manage to get the last seats there – on the sofa near the bar.  Its comfy and out of the way, and we’re happy to order our bacon roasted Brussel sprouts (tasted just as good as they sounded), bacon wrapped hot dog with kimchi slaw (equally tasty) and the Kailua pork quesadilla (the only disappointment of the meal).  After an enjoyable hour or so, people watching (oh, the children! tons and tons of children of all ages and sizes, but mostly of the small variety), we decide to head over to Kahale’s – the little dive bar we liked on our last trip here.

We walked over, actually managed to get 2 seats at the bar, chatted with the drunk local next to us, exchanging views on whatever it was he was trying to talk about, and….well….that’s about it.  We sat while the bartender stayed down at the other end of the bar talking to other people.  And sat, while some other guy worked to change the keg on the Stella Artois dispenser. And sat. And sat, even when the keg changing guy said the bartender would be right with us – which of course we said great, no worries.  And we sat some more – as the bartender studiously ignored us, then came right past us to the other end of the bar and got some other guy a beer. You know the word we both used, here, right?

Needless to say, in about 8 minutes time we were back on our lanai having our own beer and wine in a much more comfortable and hospitable atmosphere.  Sheesh.  That was a first – and a last.  Won’t be going back there any time soon!

So, after our drinks on the lanai, and Bill Maher streaming on Youtube, we hit the sack to get ready for our early wake up call in the morning.
