12/13 Evening in Trinidad

Back at the hotel, we head to our rooms to freshen up, then for a drink at the bar.  We get a big surprise in our room:  Towel animals…and a BABY to boot!  How adorable!

Back to the bar, we relax with Maggi and Richard and Sigrid – and I order a daiquiri, and get a pink one!  Hmmm…that’s new! It matches my shirt, so that works!

(Check out the table – standard accoutrements:  drinks, bug spray and camera – yeah, it’s all there!)

Maggi and Richard head to the beach.  Ed and I head to the room.  He reads on the balcony and I move the swans off the bed and collapse under the A/C vent.  Phew, rest and relaxation!

After a dribbly little shower – water pressure  not so much – we wander out to meet the group and head to dinner.  Definitely one of the best we’ve had.  The restaurant is in a house built in the middle of the 18th Century. The family owned one home – the few rooms in the front (from the previous pictures).  The kept buying houses behind them to expand so now there area series of rooms and a large kitchen in the rear for service.  Some of the different rooms are shown below – with the best one being the “wine bed” – it’s all the selections of wine they offer displayed on one of the beds!

Place settings are all elegant, with beautiful crystal and Oneida White Orchid silver that we all want to take home with us.

So dinner…we start with a soup….or a cocktail?  Hmmm… we don’t know, it’s pureed fruit, but it’s sort of chunky served in a champagne type glass. We  dub it a “souptail”….

Next – the real soup!  Thick vegetable soup with fried plantain chips on top. Very yummy and pretty eclectic plates too….

Then the entrée – oh the presentation!  This is shrimp with a panfried fish and a very spicy sauce (the first spicy thing we’ve had all trip). But what makes this dish even more spectacular are the green beans:  they are woven together!  Amazing look – and equally amazing taste!

We finish off with a dessert of fried bananas (oh yeah!), apples, mangos and of course, helado.  Forgot to take a picture of that.  Guess I got too excited by the fried bananas!

Of course all during dinner we were serenaded by a local band who were extremely good.  We bought one of their CD’s – not missing out on that one again!

So, dinner over, now we dance!  Off to the “Stairs” we go – it’s just around the corner and it is pretty packed. So much so, that we have to sit on the top level not the main band level. But then again – who cares? We’re outside, it’s a beautiful balmy night, with a soft breeze.  We just sit on the cobblestone stairs listening to the awesome beat and watching dancers take to the stage.  Great way to spend our last evening in Trinidad.
