1/20 Football in Hawaii

Playoff day!  We are up and out.  Our normal morning – walk to the beach, hit the market for our Hazelnut coffee.  we get involved in a conversation with a lady who just randomly starts talking about the helicopters flying over head 24/7.  Military.  Supposed to stop by 10pm, but recently have been flying non-stop.  So we have the whole conspiracy discussion – and chemtrails, Alien Abduction Support Groups…the whole nine yards.  She’s not a conspiracy nut – but we riff on it – and it’s a fun way to waste away our coffee time!

Back home, we hang outside on the picnic table reading the Sunday paper.  We’ve been invited to our new friends’ house for football, so we get in gear and head over there around 9:45.  Weird!  Early football!  (And not as weird as it could be—normal games @ 1:00 EST start at 8:00 AM here.)

They live in a cute, cozy neighborhood not 5 minutes from where we are.  Nice 3 bedroom ranch, with a game room that Bob has converted into his “Tiki Bar” – complete with Tiki thatched roof (attached to the ceiling).  It’s a very fun day – with neat people.  A High School friend, an ex-neighbor and his son, a softball team (and future team manager) member and another couple who they all pal around with.

We bring a PuPu (cream cheese/salsa dip with the ubiquitous Hawai’ian Portuguese sausage) and we feast on chips, dips, poke (tuna, mussels and something else good but unidentifiable), Yoshida steak and Kahlua Pork tacos. Totally yummy! We pace ourselves on the beer and wine at 10am – and make it through the first game easily chatting and cheering on the 49’ers!

We bid farewell to our new friends at halftime of the 2nd game – and head home to get organized for our long day tomorrow.  We spend a nice afternoon finishing the second game, reading outside in the sun, grilling steaks and just organizing and relaxing.

Great Sunday in Kailua!
