11/3–First evening in Brussels

Matthias has connections!  Because he is working at the hotel, we have access to the Executive lounge, which is lovely for our pre-dinner drinks and snacks.  We meet downstairs a little after 6 to start our evening.

We begin with group birthday presents!  We’ve saved each others presents to share in person.  Ours are Asheville related – a French Broad brewery shirt for Sigis and a lotion/candle for Gaby. Presents for us are Swiss (of course! are you seeing the pattern?) – Swiss chocolates in the greatest box with a cow sleeping in a bed on the top (inside joke!) and bright red Swiss umbrella!  Love it – and it will come in handy tonight as it is now pouring outside.

After a few drinks, looking at Dominic photos and the Western Parks tour pictures from last years’ Rageth adventure, we head out in the rain to dinner at restaurant on St. Catherine place.  This area is famous for seafood, there used to be a fish market here. Now it is more a picturesque square.  Matthias has chosen La Villette for our meal – and he has chosen incredibly well!

A completely intimate little restaurant with a friendly and attentive staff,  we get champagne to start (because Matthias sends so much business to them) and then move on to our mains.

Vol au Vent for Gaby, Steak with a Gueuze (beer) sauce for Matthias and me, Moules Frites for Ed and Sigis.

Everyone enjoyed their food (personally, the steak was perfection), the atmosphere and the company.  When we finally left, the rain had stopped and we had a pleasant walk back to the hotel.  We ended our evening with night caps in the bar, looking forward to a new day of exploring tomorrow.
