We finally make it to the top and are rewarded with spectacular views of the city, old port and surrounding forts and islands. Wow. This alone is worth the climb.
And the cathedral itself seals the deal. It is monstrous, with amazing arched stairs and thick protective stone walls and what look like battlements.
Inside is equally breathtaking with lots and lots of opulence, marble, gold leaf, mosaics and soaring cupolas. It’s beautiful, and even though crowded with tours and tourists, still a lovely place to sit, rest and reflect – which we do all of while catching our climbing breaths.
Back outside, we take a few more panoramic pictures,
then head back down to sea level. It is a surprisingly easy walk down – normally down is worse than up, but not today. We thread our way through narrow, winding streets and out into the lower commercial area of the city, where we stop for a cappuccino (and rest room).
