10/28–Marseilles morning

Today is another hip stress test! We are taking the RCL rip off shuttle (It’s $23 each for God’s sakes!) into town, then walking up to Notre Dame cathedral perched high atop the hillside above the old port.  It’s another gorgeous day, chilly, but sunny and we are excited to start our explorations of this port town – especially since the last time we were scheduled to be here, the port was cancelled due to high winds. The shuttle drops us a few blocks from the top of the old port – which is actually better for us than where the ship’s map says they will leave us.  We immediately light out on our own, leaving the other folks from the shuttle wandering in our wake (lots of newbies on this cruise – they were taking pictures of the bus to be sure they would find it – um, probably won’t be the same bus guys – it’s a shuttle, there are multiple buses….oh well, everyone has to have a first time for everything!)

We wander through the still shuttered streets, passing a few pedestrians and some folks out for morning breakfast.  Our goal …

…drops in and out of sight as we climb up, up, up the steep residential and commercial streets below the cathedral.

The architecture keeps us entertained – it is beautiful and so neo-classically French…

…but we’re not going to lie and tell you we didn’t have to stop a few times on our way up for a rest.  This is a real climb and we are just getting our hiking legs back in shape!
