2/8-9 Chinese New Year

Morning comes – and with it…..Football!  We stream the superbowl through our Slingbox, and actually end up watching the whole thing while sipping on our coffee and snacking on our breakfast fruits.  Even though the game didn’t turn out as we had hoped – at least it was a good game and not a blow out as it has been for so many years now.  So, that started our Chinese New Year’s celebration out right.

For the rest of the day, we sort of putter around.  Make another trip to the grocery store for more supplies and generally just hang out reading and blogging (wow – I was way behind, wasn’t I?).

Monday night finds us on the balcony as the fireworks go off.  They were much better than this picture shows – although they definitely took the Shelter Cove abbreviated route – only maybe 3 minutes.  But a very fun 3 minutes nonetheless!

On Tuesday we head to the market for the festival and lunch.  There are so many different food vendors here, the choices are dizzingly.  We walk through twice before settling on a big thing of pork (oh my gosh, my eyes were WAY bigger than my stomach)…

…and a bag of steamed squid for Ed.  Seriously, they steam them right in that bag.  How wild!

Yes, that is 100 baht for the whole bag – or about $3US.  And there were tons of little squid in there.  Ed couldn’t even finish it.  My pork was rather expensive at 180 baht – or about $5US.  Such a spendthrift – ha!

After lunch we walked through the market some more, stopping to listen to a traditional band play, and just enjoying the decorations and the atmosphere.

I picked up a neat scarf for $2US, and then we wandered home.

We are back on the Shawarma quest for dinner this evening.  We have spied a Lebanese restaurant in the corner of the market that has both Shawarma and Babaganoush on the menu.  We’re there!  First though, we make absolutely sure they have Shawarma and quiz the guy there before acquiesing to take a table!

Once settled, we order our dishes ….and….success!  We get exactly what we wanted – along with three huge pieces of naan.  Totally filling, and extremely good.  Perfect.  Quest complete!

We hit Bamboo afterward, where there is a party for one of the owners’ friends underway.  We’re just about the only farang there and feel like we are at a private gathering. They’ve got food from the restaurant, whole bottles of liquor, and the cutest little girl running around, very happily screaming like a banshee.  She was incredibly, adorably cute and moved so fast, I only got the one decent shot of her from behind!  Most of the other pix are like the first one…a blur of little blue motion.

On our way back through the market, we stumbled onto a Chinese New Year celebration with Acrobatics, pole climbing and dancing dragons.  Really amazing and fun to watch. Not so good for pictures though – only the videos.

At then end, you could go around to the Dragon and get a gold thread from his mouth for good luck – which I did and it is now gracing my purse, right next to Sunny.  Happy New Year!
