2/11 to 2/15–Avoiding Valentine’s Day in Chiang Mai

Thursday came and went – we hung close to home, and ate left overs for dinner.  We are getting very adept at mixing sauces and condiments here – even though we’ve not got our usual contingent of food products, Ed has been concocting some incredibly good meals.

Friday day time was spent reading and blogging.  Then we decided to head to Roadside for dinner.  Our favorite bartender was not there, and when I asked if it was her day off, the blond bartender just laughed at me.  Okie dokie.  Had a great meal of pork with pineapple (spicy and sweet) and fried chicken (which came in this tasty sauce and was absolutely delicious).  We decided we would come back for more of the fried chicken next week!

The same duo (girl violinist, blind guy on guitar) was there, and while we like them, we like Patrick better. So we headed down to Bamboo, where Ganh was happy to see us as always.  Sunny was happy there too… as always…

Saturday and Sunday sort of went by us. Saturday morning we took a walk south of the condo – and gazed up at the new Astra condominiums we have been watching them build for 2 years. Holy cow!  It’s huge!!!!  And not a word of English – all Chinese characters on every sign.  Guess we know whose money they are targeting.

We circled back on the diagonal road and stumbled on Tawan’s Corner Bar and Cafe.  It looks really inviting and has a 2 for 1 beer happy hour from 5 to 6. But they also have a Wine Wednesday where large glasses of wine are only 69 baht (about $2US) and a cheese platter for 69 baht.  So, something different to try next week.

We stayed in both weekend nights (especially Sunday – Valentine’s Day – when prices are ratcheted up and every place is totally busy).  Made a couple more great meals – one night pork, one night chicken.  Walked to the market Sunday morning for vegetables to go with the pork, and picked up more banana chips – found salty ones and sweet ones this time.  Bought our pomelo and jackfruit from the jackfruit lady.  Then got 1 Kilo of baby oranges for 20 baht (that’s like $0.56 cents!).  We are set for fruit and snacks!

Sunday night watched Downton Abbey (thank you Slingbox!) and just hung out.

Monday morning went to get another manicure down the street.  They don’t last that long (the only thing I hate about doing my nails) and I’m averaging 10 days maximum. Hoping I can make this one last until right before we go – 2 weeks?  thinking not.  In the afternoon, we had a Law and Order marathon (again, thanks to our Slingbox) and escaped the heat of the day pretty much entirely.  Monday night we went to the River Market Restaurant – a very pretty (and huge) teak house restaurant on the river by the iron bridge. We walk past it all the time, but when we were here last, we thought it was too pricey. Looking at the menu now, the prices aren’t all that out of whack (which means we’ve either become “less cheap” or the other prices around have risen up).  At any rate, we decided to try it.

They put us at a fantastic table right on the rail overlooking the iron bridge and the river.  Couldn’t have asked for better.  The wine was ridiculously overpriced, but the rest of the food and beer was perfect.  We started with Son-in-law eggs (cute!) which were deviled eggs with bacon and peppers on top.  Really good.

Then dug into chicken wings stuffed with Thai sausage.  How they do this, we’ll never know. The wings are huge, stuffing excellent and fried to a crispy perfection.  Not too spicy either (which Thai sausage here – Sai ua – can often be).

For our main course, we shared pork belly (barbequed and excellent) and seared ahi tuna (again excellent and perfectly prepared)!

The service was just slow enough that we spent a very enjoyable 2 hours (long for us!) eating and drinking and staring out at the iron bridge, all lit up in the night.

After dinner drinks at Bamboo, where Ganh was excited to see us and Patrick played his normal mix of great songs – including Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World a la Israel Kamakawiwoʻole .
