4/14–Early and Long Travel Day

Our day started way too early – 3:45AM for our 6:05AM flight to Dallas, then onto Honolulu.  Ugh.  Even though we went to bed early – around 9 (we stayed at the airport the night before and went into Savannah for dinner at 4:30 – found a great new bar/restaurant – Crystal Beer Parlor -  off the beaten path – new place to go!  So that was a bonus) – 3:45 still comes really quickly!  We had to order a cab to get to the airport too – because the night clerk who checked us in said the first shuttle was at 5:00 but it was full with airline crew.  The next shuttle was 5:15 – which, even though Savannah is a teeny airport, was cutting it a bit too close since we had to check a bag and we saw that there were 5 flights before us.  Tiny airport or not – security lines are still a pain and we didn't want to take the chance. We also figured TSA Pre-check wouldn’t be available that early and we would need to use the regular security line.

So we ordered a cab for – gasp – 4:30am.  The desk clerk confirmed it and gave us the number for us to call in the morning to make sure they were coming. OK.  We’re up – I call at 4:00am to confirm. No one answers.  Oh geez, here we go again, New Year’s Day redux.  Please don’t let this be ugly!

We head downstairs around 4:15, and talk to the gal at the front desk – who is adorable!  She tells us the original cab company called and was having car troubles (translated:  they just didn’t want to come out for a $5 fare at 4:30 in the morning!), but she called another company and they’d be here.  Ok. Thanks! When we tell her why we are going through all this, she tells us it’s ridiculous. That no way is the first shuttle full – and that even if it was, we could have asked the shuttle driver to come in a bit early and take us (she used to drive the shuttle and could have called! Yeah, where were you when we checked in…darn!). But, in the end, it all worked out – the cab came right on time – it was only a $5 fare and we were at the airport, bag checked, paid for, and through security with plenty of time – except for the drama of TSA finding the key/knife thingy we’ve been flying with for years – and searching the bag and then taking it away from us. Not a bit deal since I didn’t even remember I had it in the Q-tips bag! Can’t remember the last time we used it – but the TSA guy was fascinated with it.  I’d bet he kept it and took it home.  I told him it was all his!  Present!

So – onto our 6:05am flight we go – easy, quick, 2 hours to Dallas.  We get to DFW with plenty of time, but then they can’t get the jetway to work right. Oh geez. Come on.  Plenty of time starts getting less and less plenty.  But we finally get off the plane, get our carry-ons and make our way across 2 terminals to our Honolulu flight.  We snacked on our cheese on this first flight, but we’re a little peckish now – there’s a Dunkin Donuts, but the line is way too long and it’s all crap/carbs, so we go back to the gate and deal with what we’ve brought with us for snacks.

Push back on time, it’s a good, but long flight. I eat an apple with the peanut butter, we snack on the remaining cheese.  Ed buys a breakfast sandwich – I eat the crackers and chocolate we’ve brought, we watch 3 movies, read, and eventually the 8 hours just sort of go by – not too shabby!  We land in Honolulu at 12:30.  It’s like we never left!  Grab the bags, grab the Avis shuttle and we’re in the car and off to Kailua in no time.

All works smoothly – we dump our bags in the condo, head to the grocery stores to shop – POKE!! – then back at home, unpack, get organized and force ourselves to stay up until 9 so that we can sort of try to get our bodies into Island Time.

All in all, a long day – but a very good day!
