10am comes, and right on time the ticket booth opens, and we are the first to enter the museum.
The main entrance is under construction, so we walk right into the shark tank room. It’s a little disconcerting because it is really, really dark in there so we come in from the bright blue sky into this dark room with a sink right in front of us. Huh? Duh – its to wash your hands after you pet the sharks!
Eek! Pet the sharks? They give you instructions on how to just rub your hand down the side of the shark, and I try, but argh, it’s sort of freaky. And they don’t like me – I touch one and then none of them will come near me. Wish I had that effect on biting insects instead of biting fish!
After the shark room, we find our way lobby, where the Chinese New Year theme was being dismantled (and why the front door was inaccessible.
Then we get into the main part of the aquarium, which is 2 floors and truly amazing. The main aquarium is chock full of fish – all sorts and types.
The display rooms are even more fun –with lots of different fish along with interactive explanations and information. Its really entertaining and educational to wander around all the displays and spy on the fish. But, oh, are there some ugly fish!
Ick – that’ll give you nightmares! Although to be honest, this big starfish is what is going to give me nightmares – I watched it move through the bottom of the tank and it gave me goosebumps – but I couldn’t look away. Help!
I was also captivated by the jelly fish – they way they displayed them in round, tube like tanks rising from floor to ceiling, and under a black light – totally riveting.
There were the Nemo fish, the blue striped whatever fish, angel fish, icky morey eels and then some other wacky fan type fish…..
And sea anem0nes …. weird!!
Fascinating. And there were 2 more floors with displays and exhibits from Prince Ranier’s experiments and sailings. Not photo worthy, but definitely time worthy. The final floor is the restaurant and panorama, where we took a well deserved break and enjoyed the sunshine, the views…oh and riding the dolphin in the kid’s play area.
After the museum, we decided to walk down into the new town to go to the market on Places d’Armes, so we headed back to the stairs by the Palace. When we arrived at the Palace, we realized we had spent enough time in the museum that it was now time for the changing of the guards. Yay!
