We are – as always – up and out early. Want to spend as much time as we can wandering around Venice on our last half day here. We decided to go explore Cannareggio and the Jewish Ghetto this morning. So – off we go into the incredible foggy morning.
We think it might be foggier than normal today – but that doesn’t deter us from just wandering through the cobblestone maze that is Venice. You can see the alleys and buildings, just not long distances out over the water. We made our way through familiar streets (heading back toward the area where our hotel was located) then turned off the beaten path to wander through the back streets of Cannareggio.
Nothing but local Venetian life back here – boats delivering supplies, children on their way to school, workers having cappuccino and cafe at pasticceria bars before heading to work, old ladies hanging laundry out the windows. A typical Venice morning.
We wander for a couple hours – going here and there. As we head back to the ship, we stop in a little wine seller place that had caught my eye. They sell wine from the casks – and put it into old plastic water bottles. They had Pinot Grigio, 1 liter for 2 Euros. I couldn’t resist! Got a liter and figured what the heck – even if it’s horrible – for 2 Euros – who cares! Tucked it in my back pack and off we went.
Wandered back toward Accademia again and ended up at a little bar for overpriced cappuccino. But we got to sit outside and watch the food deliveries and the people – so it was worth the price of admission. It is just amazing to think that everything has to come here by boat. Everything. It gets loaded somewhere by the docks then has to be transported through the canals to each retail organization. It’s really mind boggling when you think about it.
We let the morning pass watching Venetian life, then slowly headed back to our new home on the seas for the next 18 days. Sad to say goodbye to Venice, but happily looking forward to more fun in our next ports of call and aboard the Ruby.
